Mike & Katie - Vancouver Wedding

What a rad day. Do people still say "rad"?... If not, they should. It seems to be the only word that adequately describes Mike and Katie's wedding.

There were a number of things that made the day special for me - unique vendors, fun locations, incredibly relaxed atmosphere - but the most significant was that I witnessed an old friend marry a really fantastic guy. You see, Katie and I went to high school together. We were in classes together from grade 8-12 (mostly choir!) and she was always such fun to be around. As life goes, we lost touch after high school until 9 1/2 years later when I heard about a) her life in Regina b) how she was now a homeowner c) how she met a wonderful guy at her sister's wedding 4 years previous, d) how she was going to MARRY HIM! and e) that she was wondering whether I might be the photographer. It was an easy "yes" for me!

So, on July 31st, Mike and Katie got all spiffied up and vowed to spend their lives together in front of friends and family at Queen Elizabeth Park. Then they had a grand ol' time celebrating down on Granville Island at the False Creek Community Centre.

Katie, Mike and family stayed at the Granville Island Hotel with windows facing False Creek.

The feeling in the hotel room as Katie was getting ready was so relaxed - everyone was chatting and laughing. Loved it.

After a morning haircut and beard re-shaping, Mike and his mom had brunch down at the hotel restaurant while waiting to head over to to the ceremony location.

Katie's dress was so beautifully detailed.

This handkerchief belonged to Katie's step-grandmother who carried it down the aisle on her wedding day. It has been carried by a list of family brides in the 70 years following.

The justice of the peace kept telling Mike to give Katie "a little kiss" because she thought that would help calm their nerves - very cute.

This was probably one of my favourite moments. I was trying to move around the ceremony set up as discreetly as possible - apparently Mike noticed me and decided to give me a big old smile (I think the smile was partially because he had almost made it through the ceremony! Only signing left to do...)

At the end of the ceremony, M&K greeted each and every guest under the shade of some nearby trees.

Katie's ring was so unique - it was her "something blue."

These two were impossibly cute together. They were just exploding with happiness and it really made me feel lucky that I had the chance to capture that.

M&K outside their reception venue. I know what you're thinking, "awww, they're so sweet and happy!" And in a way, you're right. But what they're ACTUALLY laughing about is that Mike had just scared the heck out of me by yelling "GOOSE! GOOSE!" as he knew I was petrified of the flock of Canadian geese that were sitting on the lawn where I had to back up to shoot from. Thanks Mike. Real nice.
